Katy ISD and Lamar CISD both added a fall break this year — and both scheduled it starting Friday, October 9. It's the first time both districts are out together.
A normal school holiday affects one district. This one hits both, in overlapping geography, at the same time. Every camp, day program and drop-in childcare option in the Katy–Fulshear–Richmond corridor is serving both districts that week.
Both new this year. Confirm with your campus before booking travel.
Katy ISD is off one day longer. If you have kids in both districts — or you're coordinating carpool with a family in the other one — Tuesday Oct 13 is a school day for Lamar CISD and a holiday for Katy ISD. That mismatch catches people every year with staggered holidays.
Not in October. Now, while there's still capacity.
If you work, that week needs coverage. Every other working parent in two districts is about to ask for the same days. First requests in usually win.
If your kid already does gymnastics, martial arts, art or swim, ask whether they're running a fall break camp. Existing families usually get first notice — and sometimes a spot before it's public.
Most providers haven't published fall break programming yet. Ask them to note your name now. A waitlist that doesn't exist yet is the easiest one to be first on.
Three families splitting four days is one day each. This is the cheapest childcare that exists and it only works if you arrange it before everyone panics.
Both districts off means flights and hotels out of Houston that weekend will price like a holiday. Oct 9 is a Friday — it's a natural long weekend for 142,000 families.
Gymnastics gyms, martial arts academies, art studios, indoor play centers and the YMCA are the providers most likely to run fall break programming in Katy. Libraries typically add extra programming on school holidays too, and it's free. Call and ask — most haven't announced yet, which is exactly why calling now works.
